Sam Allchurch has been Artistic Director of Sydney Chamber Choir since 2019. In that time, he has directed the choir in a wide range of concerts and collaborations. His repertoire spans the works of Bach and Handel to the music of contemporary Australian composers such as Luke Byrne, Anne Cawrse, Meta Cohen, Harry Sdraulig, Brooke Shelley, Nardi Simpson and Joseph Twist.

2025 highlights with Sydney Chamber Choir included co-directing a collaboration with Ensemble Nobiles and the GewandhausChor of Mass Dietrich B in the Leipzig Gewandhaus, as part of the Choir’s tour to Germany, and an acclaimed performance Bach’s Mass in B minor at City Recital Hall.

Sam is also Director of Music of Christ Church St Laurence, where he conducts the choir which dates back to 1845. In addition to weekly choral services, he has conducted the choir in performances of Bach’s St John Passion and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with The Muffat Collective, and in residencies at Westminster Abbey and the Thomaskirche, Leizpig.

Sam is Associate Artistic Director at Gondwana Choirs, where his work with young people, especially emerging tenors and basses, is widely recognised. He has prepared choirs for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Opera Australia and played a key role in presenting the Gondwana World Choral Festival.

Sam holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Melbourne and a Master in Music (Choral Studies) from the University of Cambridge where he was a Gates scholar.

Under Allchurch’s leadership, Sydney Chamber Choir’s singing is as nuanced and refined as ever, and their spirit abounds in hope.
