Paul Stanhope - Requiem

Paul Stanhope is a composer, conductor and educator, and a former Musical Director of Sydney Chamber Choir. This world premiere recording of his profoundly moving Requiem features Sydney Chamber Choir with soloists Chloe Lankshear and Richard Butler and a top-flight wind ensemble plus harp and percussion under the baton of Sam Allchurch.

Interweaving the traditional mass texts with contemporary poetry by female poets, the work offers an uplifting and ultimately life-affirming music experience that brings together consolation, connection to country, commemoration and celebration.

Taking the structure of the Latin Mass for the Dead and melding it with Indigenous poetry from a variety of sources, Stanhope has created a 45-minute work of bewildering tonal effects. The voices of soprano Chloe Lankshear and tenor Richard Butler, together with the Sydney Chamber Choir and backed by eight leading Australian musicians combine to produce something unique.
