PAUL STANHOPE
Requiem
After premiering the work to a standing ovation and glowing reviews last year, Sydney Chamber Choir is delighted to be presenting this contemporary masterpiece in Goulburn, one of regional NSW’s most vibrant musical centres. Interweaving poems by female writers, including Indigenous Australian poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Emily Dickinson and India’s Neela Nath Das, with the traditional Latin texts, Stanhope’s Requiem explores themes of consolation, connection to country, commemoration and life-affirming celebration.
Paul Stanhope’s Requiem was commissioned by Sydney Chamber Choir with generous funding support from The Russell Mills Foundation
“If you come to a Sydney Chamber Choir concert, you might hear a fresh interpretation of a familiar work, but you might also discover a new work that makes you think: ‘Wow, that was a great composer, I should follow that up’.
People come for the staples, because they think they know what to expect and are comforted by that. But I would say: ‘Allow yourself to be surprised. Allow your horizons to be broadened.’ We all need that...”
